High school players in a working-class neighborhood in the 1970s gain desperately needed structure and guidance from Jack "Clyde" Dempsey, a scrappy, charismatic coach who seems like nothing more than a football geek. But Coach also happens to be the toughest guy on the streets of Boston, with a temper to match, and it's his secret life as a mob enforcer/collector that forces him to flee the country, becoming one of America's most wanted.
In this memoir a devoted Dempsey disciple, who later became a dean at a private school outside Boston, tries 35 years later to understand his former coach, role model, and mentor - both his good side and his very dark side - and Dempsey's impact on his own life. A completely true story.

Well-written story about growing up in middle-class enclave in Boston in the 1960s and 1970s and the tribal culture that surrounds Catholic schools, cops, football, and the neighborhoods. Very straight-forward prose, honestly written, without much flinching from some very challenging episodes. Sometimes feels a little "cleaned up" in terms of language and memories. One of my all-time favorite books is Lukas' Common Ground, about the busing and race crisis in 1970s Boston; this is an interesting companion to that and a quick, enjoyable read.Product details

Both Sides of the Line The True Story of a LifeChanging Football Mentor Who Became a Longtime Target of America Most Wanted (Audible Audio Edition) Kevin Kelly Lyle Blaker Bancroft Press Books Reviews
Haven’t read it yet but can’t wait. A local book for me will know some of these characters!!
Great book for me as I grew up in Brighton in the 60's. Everyone knew of Jack Dempsey and his reputation. There were a number of tough kids from Brighton but Dempsey was in a class of his own. I knew of his football career at Boston English but had not known of his tenure at Don Bosco so that was enlightening. Easy reading and interesting theme showing the dual personality and life of one of Boston's truly tough guys.
Fascinating story. Great read for high school football coaches and fans. Excellent history on the problems of integrated schools in Boston in the 70's.
Good book, but I may be prejudiced as I was attending Don Bosco when this was going on. So many memories were brought back. Gives great insight to the the real world Boston of the 1970s. Great group of guys, remember a majority of the names mentioned. Probably best read by people who are from that area and era!
I loved this book,I played for coach Dempsey at st.columbkille before he coached at Dom bosco.what happened to in the end was not the man I knew.as Kevin wrote, the drugs and alcohol changed him.he made an impression on small group high school football players that last to this day.kevin gives you the raw power of a man who could put his arm around you and council a 16yr kid,to the drug induced killer he eventually turned into.my thought and prayers go out to the family of the young man jack murdered, but I'll remember jack Dempsey as the coach who put his arm around me at 16 years old and taught me things about myself I still hold onto today..as Kevin writes, jack " always loved his boys"..thank you Kevin for writing this story
Of you like football this is a pretty interesting book. It is better written and more interesting than most books written by so called authors
This book reflects a realistic view of teenagers growing up in the city, having an outlet (football), and trusting an impressionable leader. The author credibly recounts the coach’s dual life of helping (saving) kids while living the thug life. Great book.
